Authentic Nellore Fish Curry: A Traditional Andhra Pradesh Delicacy

Nellore fish curry

Nellore fish curry, also known as "Nellore Chepala Pulusu," is a traditional fish curry from the Nellore district in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. Here is a recipe on how to prepare it:

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb of fish fillets
  • 2 cups of tamarind juice
  • 2 cups of water
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, finely chopped
  • 2 green chilies, slit
  • 2 tsp ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 2 tsp red chili powder
  • 2 tsp coriander powder
  • 1 tsp fenugreek seeds
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • Fresh coriander leaves for garnish

Instructions:

  1. In a large pan, heat 2 cups of water and 2 cups of tamarind juice. Bring it to a boil and then reduce the heat and let it simmer.
  2. In another pan, heat oil and add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, fenugreek seeds, and let them splutter.
  3. Add chopped onions, green chilies and fry until they turn golden brown.
  4. Add ginger-garlic paste and fry for a minute.
  5. Add chopped tomatoes and fry until they turn mushy.
  6. Add turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder and salt to taste. Fry for a minute.
  7. Add the fish fillets and fry until they turn opaque.
  8. Add the tamarind juice mixture and bring it to a boil.
  9. Reduce the heat and let it simme
    r for 10-15 minutes.
  10. Turn off the heat and garnish with fresh coriander leaves.
  11. Serve hot with rice.

Note: 

You can use any fish of your choice to make this curry and adjust the quantity of tamarind and red chili powder as per your taste.
